“She is an aggressive player and I am not going to have easy point”: PV Sindhu on meeting Mia Blichfeldt in Rd 16

Xtra Time Web Desk: Reigning world champion P.V. Sindhu on Wednesday advanced to the pre-quarterfinals of women’s singles badminton event at the Tokyo Olympics after beating Hong Kong’s NY Cheung. 26 year old Sindhu will now face World No 12 Mia Blichfeldt of Denmark in the Round of 16. Sindhu has a 4-1 head-to-head record against Blichfeldt, whose only win against the Indian was at the Yonex Thailand Open earlier this year.

“Well, it’s a good feeling to be into the pre quarter finals. As I maintained every match from the group stages was important for me because you never what can happen. Since I am now into the knock out stages, I am playing Mia. It will be a good match. You need to prepare well from the first point. I played her in the last couple of tournaments (Swiss Open). I think she is an aggressive player and I need to be prepared for that,” said Sindhu talking to the media persons in Tokyo after her win against Cheung.

She also added, “It’s going to be a tough match and I need to be prepared for that and as I mentioned she is an aggressive player and I am not going to have an easy point. I need to work hard for each and every point.”

Talking about her match against Cheung, Sindhu said, “I played with her a lot of times. She is a freaky player. Even though the first game was easy for me she came back in the second game. It was very important for me to be there and control the shuttle. Yeah, there were so many unforced errors. It was very important for me to be there and focus the game.”

There will be pressure of expectation on the Rio Olympics silver medallist. On being asked what has been the difference she has experienced so far in Tokyo compared to Rio, Sindhu said, “It has been very different for me personally, experience wise, expectation and more responsibility. But when I am on court I try to give my best. I think past is past, it’s over now. I need to live on the present .What is next is important for me and not thinking about the past that I will win. Every player has worked so hard and come so far. So I think I will definitely going to miss the crowd.”

“There will be pressure but I think you need to take it as it comes. It’s just when you walk into the court you cannot think about that. It would add extra pressure. Focus for every single point,” signed off Sindhu.
