Click Next For Twitter Reactions“Trust The Process” is at an all-time low in Philadelphia after the 76ers were eliminated from the NBA Playoffs this past weekend despite having game seven on their home court. For Ben Simmons, the lost is especially difficult since his teammates and head coach pretty much directly blamed him for the team’s postseason ouster, with Doc Rivers admitting he has doubts about how far the 76ers can go with Simmons as their point guard. So, where do the Philadelphia 76ers go from here?

The heartbreaking loss of the Philadelphia 76ers in game seven Sunday night was a major topic of conversation around the NBA. After being eliminated, head coach Doc Rivers was asked if Ben Simmons could be the point guard of a championship team. “I don’t even know the answer to that right now,” was how Rivers replied in one of the worst examples of a head coach throwing a player under the bus.

"I don't know how to say it – but I thought the turning point was we had an open shot, we missed and we made one free throw."

Simmons was not safe in the locker room among his teammates either after Joel Embiid offered up what he felt the turning point of game seven was. The play came with 3:30 left in the fourth quarter and saw Simmons pass up a wide-open layup with his team down three; resulting in Matisse Thybulle converting one of two free throws after being fouled.
The knee-jerk reaction of many fans is that the 76ers should trade Ben Simmons this offseason. A plan not only fueled by raw emotion, but also by Simmons confidence and trade value being almost non-existent, as well as him still having $147 million due to him over the next four years. In other words, to trade Simmons now would be to dump and give up on player who will turn only 25 this summer.
Less than a day after throwing his best hope for winning another title under the bus, Doc Rivers said:
“I’m very bullish on Ben still. But there’s work. There is. And Ben will be willing to do it, and that’s the key. Obviously what Ben just went through, I can’t imagine that. Because he has so much greatness in all the things around him that he does. There are areas that he can fix, quickly, in my opinion, and get better, that will take him to another level … look at this as a great challenge, but definitely a doable one.”

Rivers himself is slowly becoming a head coach with a reputation of only being able to get good teams so far in the postseason and no further. Despite his lone championship in Boston, Rivers’ postseason record is quickly becoming littered with one bad loss after another, including two 18 point leads lost to Atlanta this year and four game seven losses at home by double-digits.
Now that Doc Rivers has spent a full season in Philly, he believes he knows how to fix Ben Simmons, which is a new process for 76ers fans to believe in. Then again, I would love to have someone comply a list of NBA players that Doc Rivers’ coaching skills have made better since I can’t think of any myself. “Trust the process” means trusting the people making the decision, which right now means the Philadelphia 76ers are in a world of hurt, because there is no one on their bench or in their front office I believe in to make this team better.
In short, 2021-22 will play out just as 2020-21 did, a solid regular season with a heartbreaking and frustrating early postseason exit as this franchise gets back on the hamster wheel all over again next summer until the process is blown up along with its roster.
