XtraTime web desk: Following the conclusion of the ICC World Test Championship final against Australia, Shubman Gill, the opening batsman for Team India, faced severe consequences. While the entire Indian team received a 100% penalty for their slow over-rate in the title decider, Gill was further fined 15% of his match fee due to dissent shown towards the third umpire’s decision, which led to his dismissal in the second innings. Consequently, Gill’s total fine amounted to 115% of his match fee.

Gill’s catch during the second innings against Australia sparked controversy and generated significant discussion on social media, with many criticizing the third umpire’s decision in favor of the bowling team.

The young opener also expressed his dissatisfaction with the third umpire through his social media platforms. As a result, the International Cricket Council imposed an additional fine on Gill.

According to an ICC release, Gill was found guilty of breaching Article 2.7 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which prohibits public criticism or inappropriate comments related to incidents occurring in international matches.

The release stated: “Television umpire Richard Kettleborough adjudged that a catch by Cameron Green to remove Gill had been taken cleanly. Gill took to social media later in the day to make a post that appeared to question the decision.”

The ICC’s statement also revealed that India fell five overs short of the target, accounting for time allowances, while Australia was found to be four overs short. Consequently, Australia received an 80% fine on their match fee for their slow over-rate.

These sanctions were imposed in accordance with Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which stipulates that players are fined 20 percent of their match fee for each over their team bowls beyond the allotted time.
