T20 World Cup 2021: Rashid Khan & co told to control emotions by Taliban when national anthem is played

T20 World Cup 2021: Rashid Khan & co told to control emotions by Taliban when national anthem is played

Xtra Time Web Desk: Afghanistan cricketers has been instructed by Taliban to control their emotions on the ground when the national anthem is being played during the ongoing matches of the T20 World Cup 2021 here in Dubai. Most of the Afghanistan cricketers like captain Mohammad Nabi got emotional to hear the national anthem during their opening game against Scotland at Sharjah.

It is learnt that the emotions of the Afghanistan cricketers did not go down well with the Taliban regime. The Afghan players have been asked to keep a check.

Although the Taliban officials celebrated the national cricket team’s victory over Scotland, yet the celebrations back home were quite subdued. The streets of Kabul were more or less quiet unlike the previous occasions when such victories were previously met with jubilation in the streets, fireworks and celebratory gunfire. There were only a few, small fireworks seen in the Kabul sky. The streets were mostly empty or silent.

Afghanistan beat Scotland in a match played in Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates – the first major victory for the team since the Taliban takeover of the country.

Leg spinner Rashid Khan on Thursday surprisingly restrained himself when asked about the situation in Afghanistan. Rashid, who had earlier expressed his anguish with the Taliban’s takeover of the war-torn country in the past, played it safe on the eve of the crucial Super 12, Group 2 match against Pakistan, to be played at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Sunday.

“Things are getting better. Getting normal back home and hopefully, that’s something which we only hope to see much better in the future as well. We as a team, we’re here to play good cricket and give them the kind of performance and the kind of win that they could celebrate there. And that is something as players we have in our hands. And that is something we’ll try to do in the whole competition to do better,” said Rashid in his pre match conference.

The leg-spinner was even quizzed about the uncertain future of the team given that women’s cricket has not been officially allowed.

“We don’t think about what’s happening in the future. We don’t think about what happened in the past,” said Rashid.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) will meet next month to determine the game’s future in Afghanistan under the Taliban regime.
