T20 World Cup: Marquee event to be held in UAE from October 17

Xtra Time Web Desk: It’s official. The upcoming T20 World Cup will be held in UAE from October 17. The marquee event will not be staged in India due to COVID-19 situation. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided the tournament will be staged in UAE two days after the Indian Premier League (IPL) final i.e., October 15. The final of the T20 World Cup will be played on November 14

Although the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is yet to write to the International Cricket Council (ICC), but it is learnt that the event will be staged outside India. An official confirmation from both BCCI and ICC is expected soon. International Cricket Council (ICC) had given BCCI a deadline of June 28 whether the event can be staged in India.

The upcoming T20 World Cup will be a 16-team tournament. The Round 1will include 12 matches and will comprise eight teams from which four (top two from each group) would qualify for the Super 12s. As per reports  four team from a pool of eight – Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Ireland, Netherlands, Scotland, Namibia, Oman, Papua New Guinea – will progress to the Super 12s, joining the top eight ranked T20I teams.

The Super 12s phase, comprising 30 games, is slated to begin from October 24 across three venues in the UAE – Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah.

After the Super 12s phase, there will be three playoff games – the two semi-finals and the final.

BCCI would retain hosting rights of the T20 World Cup even if the tournament is moved out of India.
