Tri-Nation Tournament: Anirudh Thapa strike gives India 1-0 win over Myanmar

Xtra Time Web Desk: India secured a 1-0 victory over Myanmar in the first game of the Tri-Nation Tournament in Imphal, Manipur on Wednesday. Anirudh Thapa scored the solitary goal for the hosts in the 45th minute. The match was the first-ever international tie played in Manipur, and the stakes were high for both sides.

India started brightly, with Jeakson Singh narrowly missing a header from an Anirudh Thapa free kick in the fourth minute. Thapa turned creator again in the ninth minute, but Sunil Chhetri’s header went above the bar. Chhetri missed some good chances to give the Blue Tigers the lead, but Thapa finally broke the deadlock in the 45th minute when he slotted the ball home from inside the box.

The visitors started the second half with renewed vigor and created some good chances, but failed to score. Sunil Chhetri did manage to get the ball into the back of the net, but the goal was disallowed due to offside, despite replays showing he was miles onside.

In the end, India held on to their 1-0 lead, with the final moments of the game seeing both sides trying to take control. Stimac handed out debuts to Mehtab Singh, Mahesh Singh, and Ritwik Das.

The Blue Tigers play their next match against the Kyrgyz Republic which will be a litmus test for Igor Stimac’s side, as they are a higher-ranked team compared to the hosts.
