Click Next For Twitter ReactionsThe first day of the Summer Olympic didn’t go well for the USA Men’s Basketball Team as they lost to France on Sunday 83-76. After the game one player from the winning team explained in just a few words what is wrong with Team USA.
During the NBA season Evan Fournier played for the Boston Celtics. This summer the wingman is part of Team France and posted 28 points in their win over Team USA Sunday.

After the game Fournier stated:
“They are better individually but they can be beaten as a team.”
While true that Team USA was thrown together with A and B-level players, the Men’s Basketball Team has long been a roster of All-Stars who, for the most part, have overwhelmed their Olympic opponents. The reason why the NBA felt it was important to send their star players to the international Summer Olympics stage was to help grow the game, which it has. The result, however, is that almost every country competing at the games has an NBA player on the court, making the road to the gold medal much more difficult for Team USA.
Since the 1992 “Dream Team,” many teams since then have just been a collection of All-Stars and those players who were willing to give up their summer in order to wear the Red, White and Blue. Players like Carmelo Anthony, who have never seen the NBA Finals in their careers, were good enough to overpower international teams in qualifying rounds and at the Olympics even when the overall roster of players was not how most general managers would build a championship team.
As proven during this year’s “exhibition rounds” and now against France, even a coach like Greg Popovich isn’t good enough to bring these talented All-Stars together and play as a team since, for the most part, they are alpha males, accustomed to taking the ball, scoring and worrying about little else.
The NBA got what it wanted thirty years ago by spreading their game around the world, now it is up to the stars of the NBA to continue the tradition of playing like a team and not put on a made-for-TV highlight show on their way to the gold medal podium. For those who enjoy the competitive balance that the Winter Olympics offers in hockey, the Summer Olympics is not closer to being an open competition for the gold medal, which is how these games should unfold.
Honestly Team USA needs to take some players off the bench and grab some solid role players and build a team, not a marquee roster and they might not be embarrassed as much … because it is clear the days of having a dozen superstar players just show up and win by 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 or even more are over, and Team USA needs to accept that and change their methods accordingly.
