Xtra Time Web Desk: The first test between India and West Indies here at Windsor Park holds a special significance for star batter Virat Kohli. Kohli is the only batter who has survived from that tour to the Caribbean in 2011. Team India Head Coach Rahul Dravid was also part of the test squad but now he is in a different capacity.
Recalling the 2011 test match, which was the third and final test of the series, Kohli posted a photo of him with Dravid. It was also the first test match in the venue.
Kohli tweeted, ‘The only two guys part of the last Test we played at Dominica in 2011. Never imagined the journey would bring us back here in different capacities. Highly grateful.’
The test match was marred by rain interruptions and a negative approach by the Indian team under MS Dhoni. Despite having a chance to pursue a challenging run chase of 86 runs from 15 overs with seven wickets in hand, the Indian team management opted for a cautious approach. The decision was justified as India had already secured a series victory after winning the first Test by 63 runs.
Ultimately, the match concluded as a tame draw, with India reaching 94 for 3 while chasing down a target of 180 runs in 32 overs on the final day. Kohli and Dravid, both unable to make significant contributions with the bat. Dravid was dismissed for just 5 runs by Darren Sammy, while Kohli managed to score 30 runs before also falling victim to Sammy.
Despite their individual performances, India obtained a substantial first innings lead of 143 runs, courtesy a valuable contribution from captain Dhoni, Suresh Raina, and VVS Laxman, all scoring half centuries.
The Windies fought back with centuries from Shivnarine Chanderpaul (116 not out) and Kirk Edwards (110), helping them reach a second innings total of 322. Harbhajan Singh and Ishant Sharma performed admirably, with Harbhajan claiming 4/75 and Ishant earning the “Player of the Match” award for his 5/77 in the first innings.
As the Indian team prepares to return to Windsor Park after a gap of 12 years, Kohli’s reflection on the past serves as a reminder of the journey and experiences that have shaped their careers.
