Xtra Time Web Desk: The names of Shardul Thakur and Sunil Narine has cropped up to lead Kolkata Knight Riders in place of injured Shreyas Iyer. The KKR captain is currently undergoing rehab for his back injury. There are serious doubts about Shreyas taking part in IPL 2023.
The KKR management will take a decision about the captaincy in the next couple of days as the new KKR captain will have to attend IPL 2023 pre-tournament captain’s briefing on March 30 in Ahmedabad.
According to a report in TOI, the KKR management will make the announcement for new captain at an event in Mumbai in the presence of team owner and Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan and a popular overseas popstar.
Shardul looks to be the frontrunner to lead the Knight Riders. The medium pacer was traded with Mumbai all-rounder Aman Khan ahead of IPL 2023 auction. Shardul was brought for a whopping amount of INR 10.75 crore.
Sunil Narine is also in the reckoning to take over the KKR captaincy. The spinner from Trinidad brings in a wealth of experience and he is also the leading wicket taker for the Kolkata based franchise with 122 scalps. More so he played a key role in Knights winning the IPL title in 2012 and 2014. But what might go against KKR captaincy is his failure as the skipper for Abu Dhabi Knight Riders in inaugural ILT20 in Abu Dhabi, finishing last in the points table.
The names of Andre Russell, Nitish Rana and Tim Southee were also speculated to lead the Kolkata based franchise. But the latest development might see Shardul Thakur being handed over the mantle of KKR captaincy.
