What Is The Main Reason Oklahoma Is Moving To The SEC?

What Is The Main Reason Oklahoma Is Moving To The SEC? | Sports Takes & News | TooAthletic.com

The college football world is still buzzing about the pending move of Texas and Oklahoma from the Big 12 to the SEC. One former Sooners’ head coach turned commentator explained to the fans of his former program why the move was necessary, while also taking a shot at their in-state rivals. That person is Bob Stoops, and in short, he tells the world what we already know, that the Longhorns and Sooners are bolting to the SEC for money.

In an op-ed piece written for The Oklahoman, former Sooners’ head coach Bob Stoops answers many of the questions on the mind of college football fan inside and outside of the state regarding the pending transfer of Texas and Oklahoma to the SEC. Stoops, who now works for Fox Sports will no longer be able see his employer broadcast OU games since they don’t have any rights to the SEC after ESPN stole them away from CBS. Nevertheless, the former Sooners’ HC explained in his op-ed how the move was good for the school long term by saying:

“The advantages are many — greater financial opportunities, better exposure, stronger recruiting and increased competition. Playing in front of full, huge stadiums will be attractive to our players, recruits, and our supportive fans. OU will be competing at the highest level of college football, which is exactly where we should be. I can’t wait for SEC programs to face our teams and our fans — I think both are the best in the country.”

Stoops’ comments directly address the belief that one of the reasons why both Texas and Oklahoma are leaving the Big 12 is because the other programs in the conference such as Kansas, Kansas State are not huge draws with fans at the stadium or on television. The problem with facing big time opponents goes away in the SEC when you are always days away from facing Alabama, Auburn, Georgia or LSU to name just a few of their future rivals.

Within the same piece, Stoops takes a clear shot at Oklahoma State University by saying, “Let’s set the record straight:

OU’s move to the SEC is what’s best for Oklahoma. The reality is that conferences are now more important than ever and, with limited spots, the strongest conferences would not accept OU if we were to require OSU to join as well … Of course, OU and OSU should work together when they can for the betterment of our state, but there are times when that is not possible.  The reality is, in today’s world, conference realignment doesn’t allow for it.”

Translation: OU is great, OSU is not!

What happens to the Big 12 Conference will unfold over the coming weeks, months and even years. What will happen when the Southeastern Conference brings Texas and Oklahoma into the fold is that a super conference of college football will be born to dominate the sport. Perhaps these discussions are what prompted talk of expanding the College Football Playoffs to 12 teams since, like the move the two schools are making, there will now be more money on the table for everyone to divide up, and the Longhorns and Sooners know being part of the SEC will help them grab some of that cash for themselves year after year in ticket sales, sponsorships, and postseason revenues.

Thanks for sharing Mr. Stoops; but we know that the business of college sports is what this move was all about, and we didn’t need to be a former head coach or a member of the media to figure that part out. We do, however, appreciate the fact that you like the move even though it screws your employers and Fox Sports who are stuck with what’s left of the Big 12 and the Pac 12, who is known for getting the best seats in the house during the College Football Playoffs, since they are rarely on the sidelines playing in the any of the postseason games.
