Which Contract Is Good For Their Team: Josh Allen Or Steph Curry? | Sports Takes & News | TooAthletic.com
August began with two athletes from two different leagues inking new contracts worth over $200 Million. The first was Stephen Curry of the Golden State Warriors who signed a four-year, $215 Million deal, making him the first NBA player in history to agree to two contracts worth over $200 Million apiece. The second was reached between the Buffalo Bills and quarterback Josh Allen, who agreed upon a six-year, $258 Million deal, making him the second highest paid player in the NFL, behind only Patrick Mahomes. So, which is the better contract, Buffalo’s contract with Josh Allen, or Golden State’s contract with Steph?

When compared to the contract signed by Dak Prescott of the Dallas Cowboys, the deal agreed upon between the Buffalo Bills and Josh Allen makes sense. Allen has improved in each of his first three seasons and proved he was worth more than the $40 Million the Dallas signal caller agreed with to stay with the Cowboys.
Josh Allen led his team to the AFC title game last season and was the runner-up to Aaron Rodgers in the MVP balloting, meaning all the arrows were pointing up for the Bills in 2021 and beyond. With Baltimore likely to slot their quarterback in between Allen and the NFL salary leader Patrick Mahomes from Kansas City sooner rather than later, the $43 Million per season average Buffalo is paying Josh Allen will look like a bargain as long as their quarterback continues to produce at a high level, and the team can field a roster to succeed. The faith the Bills had in drafting a quarterback from the University of Wyoming paid off; they have their franchise player, and he has now been rewarded.
This deal make sense for both sides.

Steph Curry’s new deal does not begin until his first max contract expires at the end of the 2021-22 season. This means Golden State will be paying their three-point shooting star $48 Million in 2022-23, the first year of his new deal, and will end the deal by paying him $59.6 Million for the 2025-26 season.
The future Hall of Famer signed his new deal while he had a career season, averaging a personal best 32 points per game, only the second time he surpassed 30/game. He reached that point production in the same year he shot the second lowest percentage from behind the three-point line, meaning Curry was scoring, but it took more shots to get those points. Proof of that lies in the fact that this was the first time in Curry’s career he averaged more than 21 field goal attempts per game while also averaging a career best 6.3 free throws per game.
In short, the Golden State Warriors achieved their 39-33 record by overwhelming opponents with a high volume of shots, which is why they ended up ninth in the Western Conference standings. If anyone in the Bay Area believes these stats are going to improve or at least stay where they were over the next five years with Curry, then this new four-year extension will be worth it. I, for one, believe that Curry’s legs will slowly begin to give out on him, and when a shooter doesn’t have his legs under him, his production goes down. So, as his salary goes up, Steph Curry’s minutes will drop.
The Buffalo Bills are paying Josh Allen for what he will do over the course of his contract extension. By comparison, the Golden State Warriors signed their deal with Steph Curry because of what he had already achieved with the franchise and with the knowledge that anything less than another max deal would be perceived as an insult, allowing him to leave in free agency next year.
Now, it’s fair to say the Bills expect Josh Allen to deliver them a Super Bowl victory, and without one his deal may look like a failure. It is not, however, reasonable for Warriors fans to expect another NBA title while Curry is still on the team under his deal; that’s why Allen’s extension makes sense and Curry’s doesn’t. The great part is that both players will be able to don their jerseys and prove those who approve or disapprove of their contracts that they are right or wrong in the years to come.
