Which Movie Should MLB Recreate In 2022? | Sports Takes & News | TooAthletic.com

With the playing of the “Field of Dreams” game a year later than originally scheduled, Major League Baseball has joined the ranks of basketball, hockey, and football in going out of their way in the name of manufacturing moments in an otherwise endless regular season. As the last of the fans drive away from the Iowa cornfield where Thursday’s game was played (a single-lane road can lead to traffic issues), I ask you this: Which baseball movie should MLB try to recreate for their next made-for-TV stunt.

We found Kevin Costner back in Iowa looking to “have a catch” with his father in the days leading up to the “Field of Dreams” game, so perhaps we should do a double feature and bring back “Bull Durham.” Unlike the fictional team behind this year’s movie them, “Bull Durham” centers around the Durham Bulls, a Triple-A minor league team from North Carolina which now is part of the Tampa Bay Rays organization. While it may take a little extra cash to bring Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins back to the Carolina League, the Durham Bulls Athletic Park is already in place and would take little work to bring up to MLB standards if called upon to host a game.

Some in the baseball media will have us believe that we are already seeing “The Natural” play baseball for the Los Angeles Angels; but while the debate between if that player is Mike Trout or Shohei Ohtani, finding a place to play that looks like the Robert Redford movie would be fun. Sadly, Buffalo’s War Memorial Stadium where the 1952 Bernard Malamud novel turned 1984 move was filmed no longer exists, this would be Major League Baseball’s chance to build a minor league team a stadium that might last a few years and better prepare players for their chance in the big show. It would also give major leaguers a chance to take aim as some light towers like Roy Hobbs did in the movie, and with a few special effects, create a Home Run Derby to remember anytime someone reached the heights and distances needed to knockout of few lights.

The one true movie to real life that Major League Baseball needs to recreate is “A League of Their Own,” which used the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League as its centerpiece. Founded during World War II by Philip Wrigley, the AAGPBL were a group of teams where all the players were female and played from 1943-1954. Now the organization is dedicated to preserving the history of the league and giving all young girls a chance to play “hardball.”

What better way to not only pay homage to the League from baseball’s past but to make it a part of the game’s future by announcing after a nationally televised game that Major League Baseball will create an all-women’s league with their current teams taking ownership in all their franchises. Hasn’t the time come for a professional baseball league for woman that has the financial support that the WNBA has from the league their male counterparts play in? Why not reboot women’s baseball in America and show that there is gender equality on the diamond just as there should be in society at large? Then, perhaps, others might take the marketing gimmicks that Major League Baseball threw together in Iowa this week seriously. Because without some meaningful statements from Rob Manfred and his employers, everything they do will always be about money and never about the fans or the future of the game that thrives in spite of them.
