Click Next For Twitter ReactionsIt has finally happened! Well, almost. ESPN has finally convinced former NFL quarterback Peyton Manning to join their Monday Night Football Broadcast. Well, at least their soon-to-be created “Manning MegaCast” that will feature both Peyton and his brother Eli Manning. And all I can say is why is ESPN wasting time with this project?
Peyton and Eli Manning will headline a Monday Night FootballMegaCast on ESPN2 and ESPN+ for three seasons through their new agreement. ESPN will produce it in conjunction with Peyton Manning’s Omaha Productions. It’s slated for 10 games each season, starting this year. pic.twitter.com/sYSdjzhn0I

ESPN has wanted to have Peyton Manning work on their Monday Night Football broadcast for years, and finally, with the help of his brother Eli agreeing to join him, the network finally has their man, well, almost.
You see, the “Manning MegaCast” won’t actually broadcast from the stadiums Monday Night Football games will be played in during the season. According to ESPN’s press release:
“Fans will be treated to a mix of in-the-moment analysis, big picture NFL dialogue, knee-jerk reaction, historical perspective, and more. Peyton and Eli will be joined each week by a to-be-determined host. Iconic and current athletes, as well as celebrities, are expected to appear throughout the season. Fans will never miss any of the action, as a multi-box viewing experience will ensure the game is always visible.”
So, let me get this straight: ESPN has so much trust in their main broadcasting team of Steve Levy, Louis Riddick Jr. and Brian Griese, that they will have a competing show to go against it that will also air during live Monday Night Football games and allow the Manning brothers and a cavalcade of stars to comment on the game. Sounds like ESPN had a meeting and said, “Yeah, about that Monday night NFL game: the main broadcast is already a circus of boring stats and commentary, so how about we add a variety/talk show to air at the same time!”
There’s one reason to do this deal for ESPN: It keeps Peyton Manning, who is now signed to an exclusive contract with the network, from working for Amazon, who was already dreaming of throwing everything including a trip to space at his feet in order to get him to work their Thursday Night Football coverage. What the network doesn’t understand is that neither Peyton nor Eli will say anything worth listening to during these broadcasts as they prove the media is like sports teams, sometimes you sign someone just to keep them to playing for another team.
Not only will Peyton or Eli Manning not say anything informative, I doubt either of them will be entertaining on their own, something ESPN clearly wants, which is why they will be bringing in other athletes and celebrities (you know, people with charisma) to carry the show as NFL fans are shown how dull both brothers are.
The “Manning MegaCast” is a mega waste of time and I, for one, don’t plan on watching it … and my prediction is that it will be canceled before the three-year, 30-game contract expires due to lack of interest since nothing noteworthy will ever come from either Peyton or Eli’s mouth during these broadcasts.
