Generosity gone wrong: Sam Oomen crashes while handing bidon to a fan
Dutch rider Sam Oomen (Jumbo-Visma) thought he’d gotten through stage 5 of the Giro d’Italia unscathed. He’d just crossed the line in 21st position – in the same group as stage winner Arnaud Démare (Groupama-FDJ) – and was making his way back to his team bus when things took a turn for the worse.
Video of the incident shows Oomen reaching out to hand his bidon to a roadside spectator. Unfortunately for Oomen, that spectator was holding a musette that promptly got caught in Oomen’s handlebars, bringing the 26-year-old rider to the ground.
Bizarrely, the spectator then seemed to berate Oomen for the incident.
Thankfully, initial reports from the Jumbo-Visma camp suggest Oomen wasn’t seriously injured in the incident. The team later confirmed to VeloNews that while Oomen is in pain, “he can continue” to race this year’s Giro.
