Knee injury delays Van der Poel's cyclocross season debut

Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Fenix) won’t be making his cyclocross season debut at the Rupchen round of the World Cup as previously planned.

As his team announced Monday on social media, his return to the discipline will be delayed one week in what was said to be a decision made “by the rider and team management after consulting with the team’s medical staff.”

Apparently, a knee injury Van der Poel suffered in a training crash in Belgium earlier this month is continuing to bother the four-time world cyclocross champ.

As Alpecin-Fenix put it, “The main reason for this [the delay] is the healing process of his knee injury which takes longer than initially anticipated, as a result of which he has not yet been able to complete specific CX training.”

Van der Poel is thus planning to make his cyclocross season debut on December 26 at the Dendermonde round of the World Cup instead, which means he is expected to miss not only Rucphen but also Namur.
