Movistar completes 2022 roster with addition of Arlenis Sierra

On Monday Movistar announced the signing of Cuban national champion Arlenis Sierra to their women’s team. Sierra will join Movistar on a two-year deal starting in 2022.

The 28-year-old started her career with Astana six seasons ago. She had a number of breakthrough performances in 2018 and 2019, the most prominent victory being the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race, the first WorldTour event of the year, in 2019. This year she won the Navarra Classic in Movistar’s home region by beating Ruth Winder and Annemiek van Vleuten in a three-up sprint. Sierra ended her 2021 season strong with an overall win at the Giro di Toscana, a stage in the Tour de l’Ardèche and the Tre Valli Varesine. The Cuban also finished fifth in the world championships.

“I’m so thankful to the team for their confidence. They really want to help me continue to develop myself and reach my best potential,” Sierra said in the team’s press release. “I want to take advantage from this new experience, make the most out of this two-year contract, achieve even better results and improve as a rider and person.”

With the addition of Sierra Movistar confirmed its roster of 14 riders for 2022. Sheyla Gutiérrez, Sara Martín, Alicia González, Lourdes Oyarbide and Gloria Rodríguez from Spain, Katrine Aalerud from Norway, Aude Biannic from France, Jelena Erić (Serbia), Barbara Guarischi (Italy), Emma Norsgaard (Denmark), Paula Patiño (Colombia), and Annemiek van Vleuten (the Netherlands) all stay. The Spanish team already announced the signing of Australian Sarah Gigante and says goodbye to Alba Teruel and to Leah Thomas who moves to Trek-Segafredo.

As a team, Movistar won 21 races in 2021, seven of which were WorldTour level, with five different riders: Annemiek van Vleuten, Emma Norsgaard, Jelena Erić, Katrine Aalerud and Leah Thomas. Van Vleuten added an Olympic title to the total.
