This new song is a love letter to cycling

You don’t hear too many songs about cycling. Yeah, there’s been a few over the years (shout-out to Shellac’s sludgy jam, ‘Riding Bikes’) but it’s not like bike riding is a popular source of inspiration for your average songwriter.

Which is why this new track from Melbourne-based Kiwi punk rockers Bakers Eddy caught our attention. ‘Hi-Vis Baby’ is a punchy, high-energy celebration of many of the things that make cycling great – riding fast, riding far, the invigorating joy of cold air on your face.

It’s also something of an anthem for cycling safety. “If you’re in a four-wheel drive, you can fuck off,” declares singer Ciarann Babbington. “My cycle. That’s my lane. Don’t touch me.” We’ve all been there.

“Unfortunately it’s not metaphorical,” Babbington said about the lyrics. “I just really like riding my bike and I hate it when dickheads in 4x4s cut you off and run you off the road.

“The words were originally supposed to be placeholders but after we demo’d the song I started listening to it while riding and it felt badass so we kept them in.”

‘Hi-Vis Baby’ is set to appear on the Bakers Eddy’s upcoming debut album, Love Boredom Bicycles, due for release on March 25.
