Don’t look now but the Ohio State softball team is on a heater and that continued on Sunday when it beat the Maryland Terrapins 3-2 to take sweep the three-game weekend series. It’s the Buckeyes’ seventh win and a row and gets them back to near the .500 mark in the conference after being well below it.
The biggest hit of the contest came not long after the game started when Kami Kortokrax hit a two-run homer to put OSU up 2-0 likely before some fans were coming back from grabbing a hot dog and beverage. From there, runs and hits were few and far between.
Ohio State added one more run in the bottom of the fifth inning when Taylor Heckman drove in Kaitlyn Farley to make it 3-0, but that would be all of the scoring for the Scarlet and Gray. Maryland did manage to score two runs in the top of the sixth inning to tighten things up, but Emily Ruck came in to close the door, sending the Buckeyes home victorious.
Pitcher Allison Smith allowed just three hits over 5.2 innings and struck out six batters for her 16th victory of the season. With the win, OSU improves its overall record to 27-17 and moves closer to .500 in the conference at 8-9.
