Woodi Washington reminisces on the goal line stand vs. the Texas Longhorns

||

It’s a series of plays that will forever go down in Red River Rivalry history. The Texas Longhorns made it all the way down to the Sooners one-yard line down seven. They had first and goal at the one and had four opportunities to score from the doorstep

On the first play, the Longhorns tried to run it up the middle with their two stud defensive tackles leading the way but it was stuffed by Kip Lewis. On the second play, they tried to bounce it outside, and it got stuffed by Dasan McCullough and a swarm of Sooners defenders.

On the third play, they once again tried going up the middle, this time to the left side, and Danny Stutsman came off of his on block to stuff the run. Also, give credit to Ethan Downs for throwing a future first-round offensive tackle to the side and helping on the tackle. On the fourth play, the Longhorns gave up trying to play bully ball and ran a pick play for Xavier Worthy on the outside. It once again was stopped short of the goal line. This time Billy Bowman and Dasan McCullough came up big on the play.

Woodi Washington was on with KREF in Norman about what he remembers from that series of plays. “Get the first stop, and we’re like, ‘Okay,’ Washington said. “We get the next one, and we’re like, ‘Okay,’ and then the third one comes, and we’re like, ‘Oh, what’s Texas thinking? Are they going to kick a field goal? Are they going to for it?’ In the very last play, they end up subbing the receivers back in, so I get back on the field. They kind of ran like a pick play on me to get Worthy into the endzone and Billy and Dasan and those guys came up and made the tackle before he got in. To me, it was just like one of the most amazing moments that I’ve been a part of as far as playing in a football game.”

It was one of those amazing moments that all fans will also remember for years to come. It’s the difference between Oklahoma winning and losing that game. One yard was the difference.

But it also shouldn’t be swept under the rug that it takes a mentality to be able to do that, and it’s a mentality that had been lacking inside the program since Bob Stoops left.

It was a moment that signaled the arrival of what a Brent Venables defense can look like. And as they continue to stack top 10 recruiting classes, we’re going to get more memorable moments out of this defense.
