Cleveland Guardians Is A Cool Name | Sports Takes & News | TooAthletic.com
Friday saw Cleveland’s baseball team reveal their new nickname to be used beginning next season … and while their new logo and the inspiration behind their new name has already been the punchline in social media jokes, the more I read about the message they are trying to send, the more I accept it. Yes, Cleveland, you have convinced me the Guardians are a cool nickname.

The Hope Memorial Bridge connects the city of Cleveland, Ohio and sits a couple of long home runs away from Progressive Field where the city’s baseball team plays. Upon the Art Deco bridge that was built in 1932 are four sculptors designed by Henry Hering and Frank Walker titled Guardians of Traffic depicting the history of travel from the horse draw carriage to the cars and trucks that spawn the American Industrial Revolution. While it might, at first seem strange to select such early 20th century symbolism for a 21st century sports franchise nickname … after seeing the message the team send out Friday morning, I admit, I get it, and I like it.

In a video titled “Together, We Are All …” Cleveland took the huge step of ridding themselves of their offensive nickname that many sports fans have wanted to see them drop for decades. In the video, poetically narrated by Tom Hanks, the lifestyle of those who live in and work in Cleveland was highlighted with the words calling for unity among those who reside on the shorts of Lake Erie. It was a message that was timely and was needed from a franchise that has used a nickname that was offensive and divisive for far too long and fought against dropping it until it was forced to by the winds of social and political change.
If you need further proof that the time for a name change was now, see the words spoken shortly after the new nickname was make public:
“Can anybody believe that the Cleveland Indians, a storied and cherished baseball franchise since taking the name in 1915, are changing their name to the Guardians? Such a disgrace, and I guarantee that the people who are most angry about it are the many Indians of our Country.”
Or these words tweeted out on Friday afternoon:
“The people of Cleveland cannot be thrilled and I, as a FORMER baseball fan, cannot believe things such as this are happening. A small group of people, with absolutely crazy ideas and policies, is forcing these changes to destroy our culture and heritage. At some point, the people will not take it anymore!”
Both quotes are from former President Donald J. Trump.
The message Tom Hanks helped the franchise put forth on Friday ended with the words:
“Together we stand with all who understand what it means to be born and built from The Land. Because this is the city we love and the game we believe in and together we are all Cleveland Guardians.”
The new name is not about four Guardians on a bridge folks, nor is the logo a tribute to a movie “Major League.” The team is trying to bring people together, and as the first American League franchise to have a Black player on the roster (See Larry Doby), it’s about time. Don’t get lost in the jokes or the clever artwork on social media, because the team is making a statement, and it’s a statement that needs to be listened to by fans, players and franchise owners in every sport: ALL FANS MATTER, even those you have offended for generations.
On Friday, the future Cleveland Guardians took their first step towards embracing that state of mind, and they need to be cheered for doing so … I just hope Baseball fans in Atlanta, hockey fans in Chicago and football fans in Kansas City are watching and taking notes, because your time to do the same thing is coming soon.
