Anilava Chatterjee, Tokyo: Indian boxer Lovlina Borgohain, who on Friday assured India its second medal at Tokyo Olympics said her only dream now is to win a gold medal for the country. The boxer from Assam made India proud by sealing a medal in boxing women’s welterweight division. She defeated former World Champion, Taipei’s Nien Chin Chen by 4-1 verdict to storm in the semis.
“I only want to win gold. I can now play in free mind,” said a gasping Lovlina while talking to media persons after her bout at the Kokugikan Arena.
The 23-year-old boxer from Assam was determined to win against Chen, having lost to her on previous four meetings. Talking about her strategy against the Chinese Taipei boxer, Lovlina said, “I didn’t have a strategy, because if you go with a strategy the opponent can find you out. I just went into the bout with a thinking I will play easy. I was confident that whatever the situation is I will handle it.”
She added, “I lost to her four times. I did a lot of thinking going into the bout. I decided to play attacking from the start.”
On being asked whether she took any stress going into the bout, Lovlina said, “I did not take too much stress. It does not help. I wanted to prove myself since I lost to her four times before.”
Lovlina will become the second Indian woman after the legendary Mary Kom to win an Olympic medal. Mary Kom, who had won the bronze medal in the 2012 London Olympics, lost her round of 16 match at Tokyo on Thursday.
“Mary di (Mary Kom) tried hard. I was very disappointed. I was very upset with her result,” said Lovlina.
