IND vs SL 1st ODI: Shikhar Dhawan & Prithvi Shaw to open; this player can get an opportunity in playing XI

Xtra Time Web Desk: Shikhar Dhawan led Indian team looks geared up for the first ODI against Sri Lanka on Sunday. The team had their first training session under the lights at the R Premadasa stadium on Friday. The Indian players have also been involved in two intra squad matches at the Sinhalese Sports Club ground. Going by the practice sessions and the intra squad matches, it looks like captain Shikhar Dhawan will open the batting with his Delhi Capitals opening partner Prithvi Shaw.

Good thing for this current Indian white ball squad is there are backup players for every position and a young and talented top-order that can even rival the best in the world. India have two potential good openers in Devdutt Padikkal and Ruturaj Gaikwad who will definitely get a chance if Prithvi fails. The middle-order too looks very strong with the likes of Suryakumar Yadav, Sanju Samson, Manish Pandey and Hardik Pandya.

As far as the spinners are concerned the trusted pair of Kul-Cha will be back for the first ODI along with Krunal Pandya. Kuldeep and Chahal have last played together during the 2019 World Cup match against England. They will have stiff competition from KKR’s mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy and Rahul Chahar.

The medium pace department will be spearheaded by vice-captain Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Navdeep Saini might get the nod ahead of Deepak Chahar for the first ODI. Let’s take a look at the probable playing XI for India in the first ODI which will be played on Sunday, July 18, 2021.
