Click Next For Twitter ReactionsCollege football could be losing one of its Power Five Conferences if the SEC steals Oklahoma and Texas from the Big 12 … and if you believe published reports from last week, the Sooners and Longhorns appear to be considering a move. While the move may be years away because of contracts already in place, where there’s smoke there’s fire, and that fire might burn down what’s left of the Big 12 Conference, which may soon be out of business for good.
The key, according to Brett McMurphy of Stadium.com is Texas, who have reportedly been flirting with the Southeastern Conference about joining them when their current media deal with the Big 12 Conference expires in 2025. Because of the Red River Rivalry, it is expected that the Longhorns will leave for the SEC, and the Oklahoma Sooners would follow them, giving the SEC 16-teams, and leaving Oklahoma State without an in-state conference rival.
(Update: Oklahoma and Texas are leaving)
It’s done, Oklahoma and Texas have notified the Big 12 they will not extend their grant of rights beyond 2024-25.

To no one’s surprise, the motivation behind why Texas may want to join the SEC is money. Without marquee teams in their conference to draw fans to games and to the television screens, being in the Big 12 is probably hurting the Longhorns financially. By joining the SEC, their chances of playing more high-profile football games will likely increase, which means more money and a better chance of playing in better bowl games and even the college football playoffs.
McMurphy and Stadium report that by the end of July the University of Texas may inform the Big 12 they do not plan to renew their media rights deal with the conference, paving the way for the Longhorns to become free agents. It would take 11 of the 14 current SEC schools to vote yes for any new program to join the conference, but with the television audiences that Texas would bring to the conference, it would be considered an easy yes vote if they want to join.
A departure of Texas and Oklahoma would mean the end of the Big 12, which is already down to 10 teams after losing Texas A&M, Colorado, Missouri and Nebraska in recent years. How this would affect the Big 12’s basketball programs is a secondary concern for everyone involved since football is the big revenue producer at almost every school. And what happens to the remaining eight or nine schools in the conference will be open for speculation over the next few years if/when Texas begins their long goodbye with the Big 12.
Enjoy the Big 12 Conference and their no-defense brand of football for the next few seasons, because a new era is coming to football in the south if the Texas Longhorns wants to take their chances in the SEC, promising annual matchups with the likes of Alabama, LSU and Georgia. The feeling for years has been there would one day be Four Super Conferences of 16 teams each, and it looks like the SEC might be the first to reach that number.
So, while this potential move will make the biggest revenue producers even more money, it probably won’t improve or diversify the college football landscape. It will only make it easier for the same schools to continue playing into January … which, the ratings show is what most football fans want anyway. As a result, we will soon say goodbye to the Big 12 Conference, and thanks for the memories.
