A successor for Manchester United’s Ed Woodward is on the verge of being named, according to reports. The appointment could be announced as soon as next month.
Following the fallout from United’s attempt to join the European Super League, the Premier League giants announced in April that the club’s executive vice-chairman would leave before the end of the year.
Although he is set to leave the club, Woodward continues to play an important role behind the scenes and is integral to the club’s efforts to bring Ronaldo back to Old Trafford.
The board has been trying tirelessly to find a replacement, who will occupy one of the most powerful positions in European football before he departs.
Following a thorough search, Sky News reports United have chosen to promote Richard Arnold – currently group managing director at the club – to the position.
Three candidates were shortlisted as United narrowed its search, all of which were already at the club, with the preference being to promote Woodward’s successor internally.
Arnold is expected to take over from Woodward by the end of October, with the announcement to come as early as October. Arnold joined United as a commercial director in 2007.
It is still unclear whether the Glazers, the club’s owners, will sign off on the decision, though it should be announced before Woodward steps down at the end of the year.
Despite the reports, Manchester United did not comment, describing them as mere speculation.
Woodward became the club’s CEO in 2012 after replacing David Gill after nine years with the club. Despite soaring commercial revenues, the club’s four-year trophy drought was its worst since the 1980s during his tenure.
Despite signing Ronaldo, Raphael Varane, Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane in the club’s final window, he’s been criticized for failing to back other managers in the transfer market.
